Children’s Residential Care worker

Salary: £26,000 -£28,000 per Annum + Sleeps (depending on experience)

Hours: Full-time (average 40 hours per week) 2 on 4 off

Contract: Permanent & Casual opportunities available

Location: Leyland

Shift patterns include days, evenings, waking nights, weekends, bank holidays, sleep-ins and lone working.


About the Role
We are looking for committed and compassionate Residential Support Workers to support children and young people aged 12–18 in a residential care setting.

The role focuses on creating a safe, supportive and homely environment while working in line with Ofsted regulations, national standards, safeguarding legislation and best practice. You will help young people develop emotionally, socially and practically, supporting them to achieve positive outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day physical, emotional and practical care to children and young people

  • Create a safe, stable, inclusive and welcoming home environment

  • Build positive and trusting relationships with young people

  • Support young people individually and in groups to develop confidence, social skills, emotional regulation and independence

  • Implement, review and contribute to individual care plans

  • Organise and participate in activities, outings and daily routines

  • Act as a positive role model and corporate parent while maintaining professional boundaries

  • Complete accurate daily records, reports, logs and planners

  • Carry out health and safety checks, fire safety tasks and general household duties

  • Communicate effectively with families, schools, social workers and external professionals

  • Attend meetings such as reviews, child protection conferences or court proceedings when required

  • Act immediately on any safeguarding concerns in line with procedures

  • Support key working sessions and contribute to assessments and reviews

  • Take responsibility for shifts and support the smooth running of the home

  • Provide cover at other residential homes when required


Experience and Knowledge Required

  • Experience working with children or young people aged 12–18 in a residential or similar setting

  • Experience managing challenging behaviour and conflict

  • Knowledge of safeguarding, child development and group living

  • Understanding of behaviour management and de-escalation strategies

  • Ability to follow policies, procedures and professional boundaries


Skills and Personal Qualities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Confident using IT systems for recording and reporting

  • Calm, resilient and able to manage challenging situations

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Motivated, reliable and emotionally mature

  • Ability to act as a stable and consistent role model

  • Respectful, inclusive and culturally aware

  • Willingness to work a 24/7 rota including sleep-ins and lone working


Qualifications and Requirements

  • Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young People or willingness to achieve within 12 months

  • Children and Workforce Development Induction Award or willingness to complete

  • Good standard of literacy, numeracy and IT skills

  • Enhanced DBS check

  • Full UK driving licence desirable but not essential
